Totem of Life

How can data and AI assist astronauts in long haul missions?

Overview
Totem
is a personal 360º camera with a generative AI that studies facial and voice recognition to measure an astronaut’s stress and mood.

Each Totem fits into the structure of a new Mars colony Memoriam, where first nation citizens can pay their respects to previous cadets before them. They can also broadcast their memories to their families in a ritual of commemoration.

Brief
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, plans to get humans to Mars as early as 2025. The mission could carry up to 100 people and there are risks.

If you were commissioned to design an essential travel item for this Martian outer-space adventure, what would that be?

The psychological nuances of long haul missions spark the discussion of personal companionship and mental health, while the imminent risk of fatality provides the basis to create a generative AI that would grow with its user.
